Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s progress and future potential in the mobility sector, focusing on green technology, EVs, and infrastructure development during his speech at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
On January 17, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, hosted at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event showcased India’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and growth in the automotive and mobility sectors.
Acknowledging industry stalwarts like Shri Nitin Gadkari and prominent figures such as Ratan Tata and Osamu Suzuki, the Prime Minister praised their contributions to India’s automotive journey. He also commended the growing scale of the expo, which now spans multiple venues, including Yashobhoomi in Dwarka and the India Expo Center in Greater Noida.
India’s Rising Automotive Sector
PM Modi highlighted the rapid growth of India’s automotive industry, which expanded by 12% last year, aligning with the vision of “Make in India, Make for the World.” With over 2.5 crore vehicles sold annually, he described India as not only the third-largest passenger vehicle market but also a major driver of global mobility aspirations.
The Prime Minister attributed this growth to India’s youthful population, an expanding middle class, and investments in world-class infrastructure. In 2024 alone, over ₹11 lakh crore was allocated for infrastructure development, significantly boosting mobility and logistics efficiency.
Green Mobility at the Core
PM Modi stressed the importance of transitioning to environmentally sustainable mobility. Initiatives like the National Electric Mobility Mission and the Green Hydrogen Mission are central to this strategy. He revealed that electric vehicle (EV) sales in India have surged by 640 times over the past decade, with over 16.8 lakh EVs sold in 2024 alone.
The government continues to support the EV ecosystem through policies such as the FAME-2 scheme, which has provided over ₹8,000 crores in incentives. The recently launched PM E-Drive Scheme aims to further accelerate EV adoption, supporting the purchase of 28 lakh EVs, including two-wheelers, e-ambulances, and e-trucks, along with the installation of 70,000 fast chargers nationwide.
Promoting Innovation and Investment
PM Modi called for investments in advanced battery technology, backed by the government’s ₹18,000 crore Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cell battery storage. He urged Indian entrepreneurs to focus on innovations that utilize locally available materials, ensuring sustainable development.
Vehicle Scrapping Policy and Clean Energy Focus
Addressing environmental concerns, the Prime Minister encouraged manufacturers to take advantage of the vehicle scrapping policy. He emphasized the importance of reducing the import bill for fossil fuels by promoting solar energy and alternative fuels, such as hydrogen and biofuels, while creating an ecosystem for green transportation.
Global Leadership in Mobility
Concluding his address, PM Modi expressed confidence in India’s role as a global leader in the mobility sector. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering innovation, technology, and sustainable practices, urging stakeholders to align with the mantra, “Make in India, Make for the World.”
